On October 11, 2016, Democracy for America (DFA) endorsed Nanci Armstrong-Temple for the District 2 seat on the Berkeley City Council. Founded by 2004 presidential candidate and DNC Chair Gov. Howard Dean, this people-powered and member-driven political action committee chose her over the District 2 incumbent.
Democracy for America is excited to endorse a candidate who has a proven track record as an activist, working side by side with people who are fighting for a more just and equitable world.” said Jim Dean, Chair of DFA. “We can’t wait to see her bring new leadership and innovative to Berkeley through community created and approved solutions.
For many years, Nanci Armstrong-Temple has worked as a grassroots organizer to empower families, provide coaching and leadership training for women-owned businesses and collaborate with local and regional leaders in the Movement for Black Lives. As a full-time mother of two and a social entrepreneur, she understands the importance of using innovative strategies to create a safe, healthy environment where every person can thrive.
Nanci Armstrong-Temple responded by saying:
Democracy for America’s grassroots members know what it means to stand up and fight for change before and after election day. Having the support of DFA is important for this campaign, but even more importantly, it gives me a unique and critical foundation from which to create the kinds of strong coalitions we need to build a Berkeley we can believe in. I am honored to receive this endorsement.
DFA’s endorsement brings with it the people power of one million members who have knock on hundreds of thousands of doors, make millions of phone calls every election, and raised and contributed more than $36.6 million to help elect 843 progressive candidates nationwide since 2004.
